Bush spreads lies to raise public fears[Back to Top | Back to List of Articles ]Chapel Hill News; Feb 26, 2003; Marnie Clark
Bush's lies have raised public fear and support for the war. Two examples:
Bush said, and it was widely reported, that the international Atomic Information Agency had said Iraq was six months away from possessing nuclear weapons. They said no such thing. Bush has said many times that Iraq has killed its own people with poison gas. In a recent New York Times article, Stephen Pelletiere, a former CIA analyst in a position to know, says that the occasion cited was during a battle between Iraq and Iran in a town Iran had occupied in which both sides used poison gas, but different kinds. It was the cyanide-based gas Iran used that killed the Kurds in the town. Iraq was believed not to have used that gas. Such lies get wide publicity. By the time they are refuted, the damage to public opinion is done. Most people never hear about the refutations.
