Petitions - 2003

Written by Arny Post, signed, faxed, and mailed by dozens of others, against Iraq War, Jan 25, 2003.

Please use your influence and authority to persuade the President to abandon his plans for a preemptive strike against Iraq. Such an action is contrary to the law of nations in that Iraq has not moved to attack the US. It is also contrary to the Constitution which limits the authorization for making war to the Congress. In this respect, the President is the agent of the Congress, not its master. A preemptive strike on the President's part is not warranted by his declared war on terrorism. Iraq is too secular to be an ally of Bin Laden, and it did not participate in the attack on the World Trade towers.

Dear Senator,

Please thank President Bush for his restraint and willingness to use diplomatic means to work with North Korea. Please use all of the influence you have to encourage him to use the same means to work with Iraq.

You might write him a letter, write letters to the editor, speak with him, sign the letter written by your colleagues Brown and Kind or co-sponsor a resolution such as House Concurrent Resolution 2 which calls for repeal of the Iraq war authorization.

I fear for the fate of the world if our president continues on the evil path of American empire-building at any cost. You are in a position to help turn him around. I expect you to make your full effort to do so. Please let me know what you choose to do.

Dear Representative Price,

I want to thank you for signing the Brown-Kind letter asking the President to continue on the path of diplomacy with Iraq. I wonder if you would be willing to take your position one step further and co-sponsor

House Concurrent Resolution 2 which calls for repeal of the Iraq war authorization.

I fear for the fate of the world if our president continues on the evil path of American empire-building at any cost. I believe your opposition and that of other Senators and Representatives has helped hold him back to some degree. Please continue and redouble your efforts. The people of our nation and the world depend upon you.

Please let me know of your decisions and progress.

The US has endorsed UN Security Council Iraq resolution 1441. Please urge the President to make every attempt to achieve Iraq's disarmament through diplomatic means and with the full support of our allies, in accordance with the process articulated in the Resolution.

The UN Resolution calls for a tough new weapons inspection regime, an inherently difficult task, requiring patience and perseverance, including additional inspection time and resources. The President's and your commitment to working through the UN Security Council and vocal support for resolution 1441 are critical to UNMOVIC/IAEA's eventual success.

I urge you to ask the President to provide assurances to Americans and the world that the United States remains committed to diplomacy and the comprehensive inspections process agreed to in UN Security Council Resolution 1441.

I am deeply concerned about potential military action against Iraq and strongly urge you to take every possible effort to avert it. Specifically, I ask that you urge President Bush to fully support UN weapons inspections and diplomacy. I further ask that you join efforts to repeal the war authorization act against Iraq.

The U.S. needs to work with the international community to pursue all peaceful alternatives to war on Iraq. We need to work collaboratively with other countries and not act unilaterally. Our ability to partner with other countries is central to our own security as well as to working towards a world of peace.

I am concerned about all of the lives that will be lost if we take military action against Iraq. I am concerned about the lives of the citizens of Iraq and of U.S. soldiers. We must pursue peaceful alternatives so that we protect the lives of Iraqi children. The U.N. weapons inspections process needs to be given the time necessary to complete its task. Once their task is completed, diplomatic and not military channels should be pursued if further action is required.

Your leadership is needed urgently to help ensure that diplomacy and comprehensive weapons inspections are pursued in collaboration with the UN and that military action is not taken against Iraq.
