U.S. should not ignore rules of law[Back to Top | Back to List of Articles ]Letter in Chapel Hill News. November 2, 2002. Tom Munk
Recently, my representative to the U.S. Congress, David Price, had three of my fellow peace activists arrested for trespassing in his office. He had the right to do this: they were violating a law.
He, the president, the Congress and most Americans share a strong desire to compel Saddam Hussein to comply with U.N. resolutions. This, too, is an effort to support the rule of law in the world.
Why, then, is he willing to support a resolution that will give the president the right to invade Iraq in violation of all international law? I hope that all the readers of this letter will contact their representatives, most of whom are even less inclined to get in the way of Bush?s dangerously illegal proposals than Price, Sens. Helms and Edwards and President Bush, and tell them that we do support the rule of law. Let?s start by requiring our president to follow it himself.
