Meeting Treasurer Needed – There is an immediate need for someone to take
over the position of Meeting treasurer. Micheal Jokinen, who has served as
Meeting treasurer for the past two years, will be unable to continue in this
position past the beginning of October. Due to sudden, totally unexpected (and
pleasant) events he and his wife will be leaving in October for a prolonged
stay in
to learn about the organization and functioning of the Meeting, and the
interaction of the Meeting with other Quaker groups as well as other faith-based
and charitable organizations. It also provides a great way to become
involved in the life of the Meeting and to get to know Meeting members. Micheal and
Catherine Elkins will be available to provide step-by-step training and
Catherine will continue to be available after Micheal departs. If interested
please contact Micheal at 544-2370 or _mpjokinen@aol.com_

The position of clerk for the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting Environmental Concerns
Committee will be available beginning in October, 2007. I have found it very
rewarding to help form this committee and now must step down. My husband Micheal
Jokinen and I will be in

the agenda for the monthly meetings, attend Meeting for Business and represent
ECC, recruit participates for ECC programming (especially youth), collaborating

the steering committee, write ECC reports for the newsletter as appropriate,
remain in contact with community organizations, send out periodic emails to the
ECC data base, and bringing to the steering committee suggestions for action on
environmental justice causes. Additionally, these activities are added: make
annual report at business meeting on ECC and collaborate with Building & Grounds
on "Greening of the Meeting House” (a bequest project).
Please come to the Sept. 9 meeting of ECC,
the clerk position, and other current environmental concerns.. Thank you, Ruth

In attendance at 8:30 am: Bob Gwyn, Jennifer Leeman, Alice Carlton, Max Drake, Marnie Clark, Ann Kessemeier, Marsha Green, Mike Green, Hank Elkins, Judy Purvis, Carolyn Stuart, Nancy Elkins, Marilyn Dyer, Paul and Joyce Munk, Candace Jean Kern, Christy Morgan, Catherine Elkins, Lynn Drake, Matt Drake, Anne Smith, Robin Harper, Janet Jones, Jim Bartow, Dottie Heninger, Samuel Leeman-Munk, Rachel Leeman-Munk, Tom Munk, Nancy Milio, Emilie Condon, Jimmy Malone, Martha Gwyn, Emily Buehler, Francis Coyle, Lloyd Kramer, Pat Mann, Pam Schwingl, Michael Jokinen, Ruth Hamilton, Bettie L. Flash, Beth Kurtz-Costes, John Hite.
The meeting began with worship. Query: How do we witness to the power of non-violence and against the glorification of violence in our culture and against the militarization of our society? Do we adequately support conscientious objectors and tax resisters?
New attenders, Paul and Joyce Munk, were welcomed.
The minutes from the June Meeting were approved with the recommendation that those in attendance always be listed.
Michael Jokinen gave the Treasurer’s Report for May and June
(attached). At the end of the fiscal
year, revenue exceeded expenses by $18,693.
The bequest has earned $1978 in interest since we got it. Catherine Elkins is leaving the Finance
Committee so they will be selecting a new clerk. Michael Jokinen asked to be relieved as
Treasurer due to the plan to begin spending half the year at their new home in
Lloyd Kramer presented the Adult Religious Education
Committee annual report (attached). He
announced that a new program, “Introduction to Quakerism,” would be held Sept.
16, 30, Oct. 14, 28, and
Carolyn Stuart presented the Children’s Religious Education annual report (attached). Questions were raised about whether we are teaching non-Judeo-Christian sacred texts and are we intentionally teaching about and connecting with Muslims in our local community? Yes, in the multi-cultural unit, but the committee will give further considerations to these questions. The CRE annual report was accepted with appreciation.
Samuel Leeman-Munk read a letter requesting support for his position as a conscientious objector (attached). Friends spoke in support and appreciation of Sam’s position and in hope that our meeting continue such support in the future when such a position may become difficult ad challenging. A request was made that we assemble the long list of letters written by our youth and do something with them, perhaps post them in a special section on our web site. The meeting agreed to minute our support for Sam’s declaration of his conviction as a conscientious objector.
Hank Elkins made two requests for Peace & Social Concerns Committee:
1.) That the meeting approve giving moneys from the Social Action Discretionary Fund left over from last year as follows: $300 to Right Sharing of World Resources, $200 to the NC Council of Churches, and $200 to the Bolivian Quaker Education Fund to support a dormitory for students who now must walk two hours morning and evening to attend the Bolivian Quaker School, for a total of $700. The meeting approved this request with appreciation.
2.) That from this year’s Social Action Discretionary Fund we purchase 60 bottles of the Palestinian Olive Oil to sell to Friends at $20/bottle and ten packages of olive oil soap at $20/package from the American Friends Service Committee office in Atlanta, returning the proceeds to the Social Action Discretionary Fund with any addition profit going to AFSC as a contribution. The meeting approved this proposal in general, asking the committee to tweak the details as necessary.
Ruth Hamilton of the Environmental Concerns Committee plans
to attend the Quaker Earthcare Witness Steering Committee meeting
The meeting agreed to reconvene meeting for worship with
attention to business at
The clerk announced that Eric and Catherine Elkins, Marilyn
Dyer, and Marnie Clark attended Frances Coyle’s court appearance on July
11.
The meeting closed with worship.
In attendance at 12:30 pm: Jennifer Leeman, Alice Carlton, Mike Green, Marsha Green, Francis Coyle, Pam Schwingl, Pat Mann, Ann Kessemeier, Bettie L. Flash, Dottie Heninger, Catherine Elkins, Stuart Phillips, Bob Cooper, Emilie Condon, Christy Morgan, William Young, Anne Smith, Nancy Elkins, Hank Elkins, Marnie Clark, Marilyn Dyer, Lynn Drake, Carolyn Stuart.
Upon reconvening at
Pat Mann shared the report from Ministry and Worship
Committee on the
Marsha Green presented the proposal of the Ad Hoc Committee on Bequests (attached). Friends agreed to proceed with the four projects proposed. Friends recognized that there are many projects that the meeting could support, and those projects may be addressed in the future. However, we need to move forward with our plans for the bequest money and will do so by focusing on the following:
1. A one-year intern for NC Choices for Youth to help provide statewide publicity for their information about alternatives to the military for high school students.
2.
Support for Quaker House as they work to steward their
facility in
3. Assist the meeting in the stewardship of its own meeting house, with particular interest in making it more environmentally friendly.
4. Fund a program of spiritual enrichment for the meeting.
Friends also agreed to have the proposals go to the following standing committees to be further developed:
1. NC Choices for Youth – Peace and Social Concerns
2. Quaker House – Peace and Social Concerns and the Quaker House Board
3. Meeting Stewardship of Meeting House – Buildings & Grounds and Environmental Concerns Committee.
4. Spiritual Enrichment – Adult Religious Education, Ministry & Worship and Leadership Development.
Friend Marilyn Dyer read prepared remarks. Several individuals raised questions about whether resources already exist to fund/facilitate spiritual enrichment. The committees developing this proposal were asked to explore existing resources as part of their process.
After lengthy discussion, Friends approved the following minute:
We agree to ask that, for each of the four projects, the standing committees, as identified by the Ad Hoc Committee on Bequests, will develop a proposal and a budget that is as clear and detailed as possible. Representatives from those committees will then meet together with the clerk to review the proposals and develop a process for presenting them to the October Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business. We agreed to lay down the Ad Hoc Committee on Bequests with gratitude. The Clerk will contact the aforementioned committee clerks to start this next part of the process.
Marilyn Dyer presented a letter to the business meeting outlining her concerns about the spiritual enrichment proposal (attached).
Respectfully submitted,
Alice Carlton, recording secretary pro tem

Environmental Concerns
Committee (ECC):
In keeping with Quaker
testimonies of simplicity and justice this committee proposes to provide a
focus for the Meeting’s concern with humankind’s impact on the environment, and
with the rights and well being of all of earth’s life forms and supporting
systems. A major concern is for the
impact of our current use of fossil fuels and the consequences of their
depletion. This committee will also
encourage quiet and active contemplation of nature. The committee will share information
internally, with the Meeting, and with larger communities. It will participate in a wider support
network, publicizing information and opportunities for timely action. It will oversee the Environmental
Discretionary Fund and will be the Meeting’s contact with Quaker Earthcare
Witness. (Committee meets 2nd First Day of the month,

The Adult Religious
Education Committee seeks to nurture the spiritual growth of Friends and help
members and attenders develop a deeper understanding of the traditions,
history, social concerns, and actions of people in the Religious Society of
Friends. The committee also strives to
connect the spiritual and social concerns of our local Quaker community with
the beliefs and actions of both past and present Quakers around the world. These goals lead to the presentations and
discussions at the weekly forums between the two Meetings for Worship during
the school year and to other discussion groups and special events.
The Meeting’s weekly forums
took on a new vitality in 2006-07 because of the decision to expand each forum
from the traditional 45-minute format to a full hour (
The themes of forums are
designed to help Friends reflect on the rich diversity of Quakerism, on the
spiritual journeys of persons within our Meeting, on the connections between
Quaker beliefs and social action, on the work of Quaker organizations, and on
the diverse activities of the Meeting's various committees. Forums in this past year thus focused on
themes such as the history of Quakerism and Quaker practices, "personal
sharings" in which members of the Meeting describe their own spiritual
journeys, and regular forums on current social issues, which the Peace and
Social Concerns Committee usually organized for the fourth Sunday of each
month. We also continued to schedule occasional forums on the Meeting's
relationship with national Quaker organizations.
The forums this past year
were generally well attended, averaging about 20 to 30 persons each week. As usual, the personal sharings drew
especially large numbers. The Committee
tries to include forums that feature younger people as speakers or panelists,
but forums have generally not drawn as many young people as we hoped to attract. The forums have often attracted newcomers,
however, perhaps because visitors and newcomers are eager to learn about Quaker
history, testimonies, and practices..
The ARE Committee views the weekly forums as an important opportunity
for members of the Meeting to develop a deeper sense of community and to learn
more about the spiritual concerns of other persons in our Meeting.
In addition to the weekly
forums, the ARE committee has been pleased to see the continuing development of
a new spiritual enrichment program, "Plumbing the Depths of Quakerism"
(PDQ). Although the committee did not
organize this program, it strongly endorses its goals; and we also asked the
program's organizers, Mike Green and Jan Hutton, to lead a forum on the themes
that "Plumbing the Depths" addresses.
The ARE Committee is currently planning a new, multi-week program on
Quaker Faith and practices (“Introduction to Quakerism”) which will be
presented in the fall of 2007. This
series of conversations will complement rather than overlap with PDQ, and it
will be led by members of the ARE Committee.
The committee has
occasionally considered the idea of holding forums in the summer months, but we
have concluded that it is better to continue the traditional forum schedule,
which coincides with the local school calendar—late August to early June.
The ARE Committee welcomes suggestions for future forums; and
we appreciate the many ways in which members of the Meeting and various Meeting Committees contribute to
the success of the weekly forums. We see the programs of the ARE as one of the
places in which members of the Meeting build their sense of belonging to the
Society of Friends.
Members of the committee for

In July 2006, Eloise Grathwohl and Alexis Moore left
the committee after many years of service both as both teachers and committee
members. We appreciate their many contributions. In September 2006, we welcomed Cecelia Carver
and Jason Child to the committee. In
addition to Cecelia and Jason, the following members have served on the
committee for the past year: Jennifer Leeman,
Nancy Martin, Merideth Tomlinson and Carolyn Stuart (clerk). As FDS Coordinator, Marsha Green has served
on the committee in an ex-officio status.
As the new fiscal year begins, the committee welcomes three new members
for service: Rachel Leeman-Munk, Bill McDonnell and Bonnie Raphael. Upon accepting the meeting’s request that she
become clerk, Jennifer Leeman stepped down from the committee. Sarah White, the new FDS Coordinator, began
serving on the committee in an ex-officio status in June. Current committee membership includes the
following friends: Cecelia Carver, Jason
Child, Rachel Leeman-Munk, Nancy Martin, Bill McDonnell, Bonnie Raphael,
Carolyn Stuart, Merideth Tomlinson and Sarah White, ex-officio.
The committee wishes to minute our appreciation for
the work of Marsha Green over the past three years as FDS Coordinator. Marsha has performed her work with great
respect for the meeting’s children, families and the committee members, skill
in curriculum design and instruction, joy and a much appreciated sense of
humor. We will miss her and we look
forward to working with Sarah.
There are three classes in the FDS program under the
care of the Children’s Religious Education committee: the pre-K program for
children ages three through kindergarten, the grades 1 through 3 pod, and the
grades 4 and 5 pod. Nancy Martin, Lynn
Drake, Mark Hulbert and Meredith Tomlinson taught the pre-K through
kindergarten children, and approximately four to eight children attended on a
regular basis. In grades 1-3 pod,
Jennifer Leeman and Jason Child joined by Terry Mehlman and Sarah White taught
this group. From four to seven children
are in this group. Carolyn Stuart and
Marsha Green taught the grades 4 and 5 pod during the winter and spring. Marnie Clark and Carolyn taught the group in
the fall with assistance from Nancy Elkins and Kay Eager. From two to five
children are in this group.
For the past few years, the curriculum has followed
this pattern. During the fall (late
August through late November), teachers and students study Quakerism --our
history, practice and testimonies; from late November through the Holidays, we
focus on the meaning of Christmas; from January through March, we study Sacred Writings, and in April and May, we are engaged in multicultural units of
study. For the past few years, students
have studied the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and New Testament for the
Sacred Writings portion of the curriculum.
CRE also works with Youth Religious Education and the FDS Coordinator to
plan the summer program.
The
theme of the children’s program last summer was “Living the Psalms.” Children made “a joyful noise” or considered
how one might “consider the wonders of the firmament” through song, drama and
art. During the fall 2006 study of
Quakerism, the pre-K group practiced
living in Quaker harmony through a variety of hand-on activities, and the
grades 1-3 pod experienced Quaker testimonies through art, song and discussion. Marnie Clark and Carolyn Stuart led the grades
4 and 5 pod in a study of the history of the Chapel Hill Meeting. The following Friends shared their
experiences Dirk Spruyt, Hank Elkins, Bob Gwyn, Lois Ann Hobbs, Bettie Flash,
Orianna Filiaci, Miranda Parker, and Norah Davis. During the Holidays, children made Christmas
cards for Friends who are not able to attend meeting regularly, created
ornaments and decorations for the Christmas tree and prepared for the play
presented at the meeting Christmas party. In spring 2007, we studied the New
Testament. Pre-K through kindergarten teachers read Bible stories. The grades
1-3 pod explored Jesus’ parables and the grades 4 and 5 pod studied the
similarities between Paul’s ministry in the Book of Acts and the ministry of
George Fox – a curriculum developed by FDS by Marsha Green. In the current summer program, Friends have
been invited to share stories, crafts, arts and songs with the children.
Several Family Potlucks have been hosted by members
of the committee. The potlucks serve as a time for families and their children
to share a meal in the home of a committee member and get to know one
another.
CRE committee meetings are also times for members to
discuss the nature of our Quaker faith and our intent to share our share our
faith with children. What do we want to
convey to the next generation? In so
doing we have dealt with such issues as the following: How do we deal with the
violence that is part of many stories included in the Bible? How do we nurture
the spiritual lives of children in a variety of ways, including an appreciation
of the natural world? How do we teach
children to live in community during FDS and respect the contributions of
all? How do we care for ourselves, as
teachers, parents and committee members so that we give from the fullness of
the Spirit?
We face several challenges: More fully integrating children and young
families into the larger life of the meeting; providing sufficient support for
FDS teachers; and providing opportunities for Friends to spend time with the meeting’s
children in ways other than teaching FDS.
We look forward to another year of building community within the meeting
by caring for our children.
Respectfully submitted:
Carolyn Stuart (clerk) for the committee:
Cecelia Carver, Jason Child, Jennifer Leeman, Nancy Martin, Merideth
Tomlinson and Marsha Green, ex-officio.
Dear
Being of Quaker upbringing, I have always leaned
steeply towards the side of nonviolence. Since
late middle school I never
doubted that each life is beautiful and highly precious. My moral and
ethical beliefs do not permit me to
involve myself in the killing carried out by any organization. Therefore, I ask
the Chapel Hill Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends recognize my
position as a conscientious objector.
In my journeys, I have determined that so far nearly
every war and act of violence has had two sides, each claiming a sacred or
noble goal. One of these goals triumphs and brings happiness to its supporters
while the other fails and demoralizes its followers. Regardless of the winner,
shattered dreams, ruined families, and angry, violent friends of the fallen lie
in the aftermath. The angry and violent friends will start another war which
will shatter more dreams and ruin more families and create more angry friends
that continue the process indefinitely, each time claiming another sacred or
noble goal and insisting that once this goal is achieved, no more
battles need happen.
I will admit that some wars saved the lives of some
innocent people. For example, I respect the
soldiers who were willing
to give their and other people's lives to end the Holocaust. They were truly
brave
men and women doing what
they thought was best with no regard to their personal safety. However, most
of the Germans
participating in the Holocaust were not so inherently evil themselves.
Incredible
propaganda and lethal
danger to those who refused coerced many normal, everyday Germans into doing
horrible acts that safe,
secure Americans and Englishmen could not, and still cannot imagine. Thus, if I
were to participate in the
war, I would be killing, among the few real evil Nazis (assuming that anyone
can be truly evil), many poor, scared Germans whose only defining difference
from me was their place of birth. I respect those who, for a cause as noble as
saving the Jews, ventured out onto the battlefield, but I personally would have
sought to help my country elsewhere and strove to prevent future wars before
they happened.
No mortal cause can be sacred enough and sure enough
for me to take even
one human life. I am not
semi-omniscient, not godlike, not able to see into the future, and not led by
anyone who is. The only
things I can be absolutely certain of when I take a life is that I am
shattering a
dream, punching a hole in a
family, and snapping a link in a circle of friends. Therefore, I, Samuel
Leeman-
Munk cannot trust any
human's cause, even an end to war and human suffering, enough to take a life or
personally participate in war.
Sincerely,
Samuel Leeman-Munk

What is the spiritual state of the Meeting?
How is my personal spiritual path connected to the Meeting?
Why do I choose to worship with the Meeting?
After fellowship and refreshments, friends convened in the meeting room for opening worship. We introduced ourselves by giving our names, saying how long we have been coming to the Chapel Hill Meeting, and sharing one thing about Quakerism that has brought each of us to the Meeting. We then divided into small worship-sharing groups to consider the three queries. After an hour, we had a br
